Overview
During the third day (the last part of the Derivative phase) of Creation Week about 6,000 years ago, God created the Sun, the Moon (or Luna) as well as the incalculable number of stars and heavenly bodies throughout the empty space that the universe consisted of.
He created these beautiful and fascinating far-away worlds to demonstrate His glory and to mark times and seasons (like days, weeks, months and years). |
Genesis 1:14-19 states:
14 Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; 15 and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so. 16 Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also. 17 God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18 and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 So the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

Geology and biology
Both the Sun and the Moon would become crucial ingredients to sustain life on Earth. The Sun would warm the Earth and be an important factor within photosynthesis, while the Moon would be responsible for tides that would further cause the oceans to erode the exposed land area. Each of these bodies would also provide with light upon the day and the night. Life was dominated exclusively by plant life during this time.
